4,500 arrested for pyramid selling in 2011

BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) — Chinese police detained more than 4,500 suspects in the 1,900 cases of pyramid selling they investigated in 2011, according to figures released on Friday.

During the investigation, the police froze nearly 900 million yuan (143 U.S. dollars) of illegal assets, said a statement jointly issued by the Ministry of Public Security and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Liquidation blocked for iPad trademark dispute company

SHENZHEN, March 31 (Xinhua) — A court on Saturday blocked a request to liquidate Proview Electronics, which is in dispute with Apple Inc. over the use of the iPad trademark.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Shenzhen rejected the request filed by Proview’s creditor Fubon Insurance, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based Fubon Financial, on the grounds that the iPad trademark owned by Proview as a company asset might be valuable enough to pay off its debts.

3,651 drunk drivers have licenses revoked

BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) — Chinese police announced Wednesday that 3,651 convicted drunk drivers have had their driver’s licenses permanently revoked since the introduction of an upgraded statute last May.
Such punishments apply to those drivers whose drunk driving causes an accident serious enough to constitute a crime, according to the amended Road Traffic Safety Law which went into effect on May 1, 2011.

China stocks hit six-week low

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) — Chinese stocks dropped to a six-week low on Tuesday, dragged down mainly by liquor producers and oil refineries.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.15 percent, or 3.42 points, to end at 2,347.18.

The Shenzhen Component Index dropped 1.05 percent, or 104.75 points, to end at 9,841.38.

Combined turnover on the two bourses expanded to 124.97 billion yuan (19.89 billion U.S. dollars) from 107.4 billion yuan the previous trading day.

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) — China’s consumer quality watchdog on Tuesday urged the manufacturer of imported Renault automobiles to recall two defective models and take immediate action to remove potential safety hazards.

China reports 900,000 cases of active TB in 2011

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) — About 900,000 cases of active tuberculosis (TB) were discovered and treated in 2011, including 423,000 infectious cases, the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced Monday at a press conference.

Xiao Donglou, a health inspector from the MOH, said at the press conference that China improved its ability to prevent and control TB last year, focusing on HIV/TB co-infections and cases of TB among the country’s migrant population.
