MANILA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — At least 13 persons were confirmed dead and 572 others have been rescued after a passenger ship and a cargo vessel collided in central Philippines, government agency said Saturday.
MV St. Tomas Aquinas, a passenger ship from Butuan bound for Cebu city, has 118 crew and 752 passengers while MV Sulpicio Express 7, a cargo vessel bound for Davao city, has 36 crew. The passenger ship sank at around 11 p.m. Friday, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
Upon receiving report, the Philippine Coast Gard (PCG) central Visayas immediately dispatched search and rescue a vessel to search the missing.
Dead victims have been brought to Cebu city for identification and subsequently transported to a local funeral parlor, the agency said.
